Synopsis

Isabelle and her twin brother Théo, remained only with Paris during the holidays of their parents, invite Matthew, an American student on their premises. In this apartment where they are delivered to themselves, they will fix the rules of a play which will lead them to explore their emotional and sexual identity. With the wire of the hours, the part intensifies, the directions and the spirits are exacerbated.

With for backdrop torn France of May 68, reflection of a youth whose voice resounds in all Europe, The Dreamers is an initiatory voyage existentialist: that of three teenagers testing their own limits for finally being.

Anecdotes

The Dreamers is the film adaptation of the novel of Gilbert Adair, The Holy innocent . Bernardo Bertolucci discovered this work whereas he wondered seriously about his next film. He then thought of giving one following 1900, his masterpiece epic turned in 1975 and whose action finished in 1945. But this account intimist of an eternal triangle, located during the riots of May 68 at Paris, awoke in him marvellous memories. Bertolucci makes it read with Jeremy Thomas, his producer fetish since the beginning of the the Eighties and the Last emperor and the acceptance of this one, will make project a film.

It is Jake Gyllenhaal which was at the beginning to interpret the role of the American student. But the actor having finally given up, because of the scenes of naked, Michael Pitt was selected in his place.
