The scale of Mercalli is a scale of classification of the Séisme S. It is subjective, founded on the extent of the damage observed.

History

It is the volcanologist Giuseppe Mercalli which in 1902 created this scale. It was largely used before the creation of the scale of Richter in 1935. It measures the intensity of the felt jolts and the damage produced on the surface of the ground, with a graduation going of I with XII.
