The initials of three letters ( STL ) are extremely current in French, in about all the fields of the human activities: DOS , TCP , WWW , GCC , SGI , JPG , VLA , PLEASE LHC , HAD , RPR , UDF , UMP , PSU , IBM , STL , DSA , FFT , FF , GDP , BNP , CJC

If the accentuated symbols and characters are neglected, there is 26^3=17576 of it. If one takes into account, in addition to the 26 letters of the alphabet, the 10 figures, plus the characters “+” and “-”, usually used in the initials (C++, MP3), we can manufacture 38^3=54872 different combinations. They have all at least a significance, much of them have even several of them.

Many initials result directly from English and were adopted such as they are in French. In French, the term Acronyme is reserved for the Sigle S for which there exists a pronunciation, without spelling the letters. ISO is an acronym (delivery izo ), which is not initials, but only a Abréviation, whereas CPU is initials (delivery “C - EP - hu”).
