Inigo Jones (July 15th 1573 – June 21st 1652) is regarded as the first important English architect.
Biography
Inigo JONES was born in London about 1573, one knows precisely only his date of baptism which is on July 15th, 1573.
Wire of clothier he studies and obtains his degrees in England. It particularly gifted for decorative arts.
It most probably remains in Italy between 1598 and 1603, and in particular in Venice until 1601. He studies the works of Serlio, Vignole, Fontana, Labaco, Philibert of the Elm, Rome visit, Vicence, Venice, Florence and His. He returns to England then goes back to Venice in 1606 with Lord Arundel he meets there the ambassador Sir Henry Wotton. Wotton gets for Jones a specimen of the edition of 1570 of the Quatro Libbri LED' structured of Andrea Palladio.
Between 1613 and 1614 Jones makes a stay in Venice during which it meets Scamozzi, the successor of the Palladio.
Of return in the United Kingdom JONES by the king Jacques Ier of England “surveyor off the King works is named”. Inigo Jones carries out with the dramatic author Ben Jonson a series of entertainments of court called " Masques". Inigo Jones carries out the drawings of the costumes, the decorations and develops the special effects. This collaboration has a great success at the court. Inigo Jones and Ben Jonson will scramble themselves and Ben Jonson will carry out several satirical portrait of Jones in his parts. In 1620 Jones a study on Stonehenge realizes and advances a theory based on the Geometry of an antiquated Toscan temple. As Elm and Palladio it restores in the English language the use of the title of Architect whom it allots. With Henry WOTTON he works with the edition of the “Vitruvius britanicus” translation in English of “structured” of Vitruve. Jones never separates from his “Quatro Libbri of ell' structured” of PALLADIO, which it annotates and supplements unceasingly, this annotated work is deposited with the library of Worcester Collège of Oxford.
In 1625 it realizes for the arrival of Henriette-Marie de France, wife of the king Charles I of England, a catholic vault which is worth remonstrances of the English Protestant puritans to him.
In 1642 the English revolution puts brutally fine at the architectural career of Inigo Jones.
Its successors at the station of " Surveyor off the king' S works" will be John Denham then in 1669 Sir Christopher Wren.
