Ingres (database)

See also: Ingres (homonymy)

Ingres is a relational DBMS, just like DB2, Oracle or MySQL to quote most known. Ingres means: IN telligent G raphic RE lational S ystem.

Its originator, Michael Stonebraker, decided to start again the development from zero in 1985, but while continuing to develop the ideas of Ingres. He launched out in a project post-Ingres , which was initially named Postgres, then PostgreSQL since 1995.

Held between 1994 and 2005 by Computer Associates, and resold since with a Funds of investment, Ingres became free since 2004: its license is GNU LPG.

Its trade description changed almost with each new version. Chronologically:

  • Ingres 6.4
  • OpenIngres 1.0
  • Ingres II 2.0
  • Advantage Ingres 2.6
  • Ingres r3
  • Ingres 2006 currently

It functions primarily on systems UNIX, but also on Linux, Microsoft Windows and VMS. It is still used by administrations or large accounts and in many places where one needs a powerful DBMS (known as of class undertaken), stable and powerful. It is known of its users for his simplicity of administration and the facility with which it sets out again, and this without loss of data (which remain very exceptional). It is used much in embarked systems, which is at the same time a force and a weakness. At one time when the brawl of the databases made rage, other editors having more developed strategies marketing then took the top. The product then knew a loss of adherence of the market, the new projects turning to competition. For the existing applications and not evolving/moving, it ends up being made forget.

However where only one Ingres administrator can manage a park of 80 databases one needs 3 people to manage 10 databases of a competing product. One said of Ingres that the product did not evolve/move, which is completely false. At present it is on the way to fill the delay " marketing" functionalities which it misses compared to other open solutions source (example: incremented columns car, before trigger, etc).
