Ingemar Stenmark
Ingemar Stenmark , born the March 18th 1956 with Joesjö in the Common of Storuman, is old a alpine skier Swedish of the Années 1970 and 1980. He is regarded as one of the Swedish sporting great champions and a reference in the tests of slalom and giant slalom in Alpine skiing (recordman of victory in world cup with 86 victories between 1974 and 1989).
Beginning
Born in the Swedish Lapland, its family moves with Tärnaby when it is four years old and becomes close to Stig Strand (another alpine ski champion which will gain a test of world cup). It begins with the Alpine skiing at the five years age and gains its first national title at eight years.
Sporting course with the more high level
Stenmark gained more victories in Alpine skiing than any other skier with a total of 86 championship victories of the world (the second better performer is Hermann Maier with 53 victories). It was essential only in two disciplines: the slalom and the giant slalom (the other disciplines are the descent, the super G which exists since 1982 and the combined). Badly at ease in the tests speed, it never gained test there. It gains with three recoveries the general classification of the world cup into 1976,1977 and 1978 and dominated the slalom and the lasting slalom of which it gains the classifications (slalom in 1975,1976,1977,1978,1979,1980,1981 and 1983, and giant slalom in 1975,1976,1977,1978,1979,1980,1981 and 1984). He becomes also world champion of the slalom and of the giant slalom in 1978 with Garmisch-Partenkirchen, world champion of slalom in 1982, finally he gains the Olympic titles in 1980 of slalom and giant slalom with Lake Placid. It could not be aligned with the Winter Olympics of 1984 because of its professional statute but remade an appearance in 1988 in Calgary.
Side rewards, Stenmark gained the Svenska Dagbladets guldmedalj in 1975 and 1978 (it had to share this last reward with the tennis player Björn Borg), and was one of rare not-Norwegian to gain the Holmenkollmedaljen in 1979. At the beginning of 2006, it was elected by its pars via the Team magazine " Skier of the siècle" in front of Jean Claude Killy and Toni Sailer, in a quasi-unanimity.
