Inga dams

See also: Inga (homonymy)

The hydro-electric stoppings of Inga are two Barrage S located in Democratic republic of Congo, on the river Congo in the province of the Low-Congo, near the town of Matadi. These two distinct works are called Inga I and Inga II. Inga III and Grand Inga are currently only projects.

These works, following the example Iron and steel plant of Maluku, were built within the framework of a development policy and prestige of the country by the mode of President Mobutu Sese Seko. The maintenance of the stoppings not being able to be assured, those function from now on with the idle. They are exploited by the National company of electricity (SNEL).

As other Pharaonic works created in the country with the service of policies of prestige which could not be assumed, they are often described as white elephants.

Philippe of Dieuleveult, organizer of the famous French television program Hunting for the treasures, disappeared on August 6th, 1985 at the end of the morning near Inga.

Features

Export of electricity towards the Angola, the Republic of Congo and the Zimbabwe. Lines also connect the complex to the Zambia, with the Botswana, the Namibia and the South Africa. A line high voltage indeed connects the stopping to Lubumbashi and the Zambian province of the Copperbelt: the project Inga-Shaba.

One second line high-tension is considered towards north in direction of the countries of the Golfe of Guinea. A third finally is envisaged towards the North-West, in direction of the Chad and the Sudan.

In addition, only 5% of the Congolese population have access to electricity. Kinshasa itself is imperfectly served.

  • Inga I: 351 MW, service entrance in 1972.

  • Inga II: 1.424 MW, service entrance in 1982.
  • Inga III: 3.500 MW, in project

Inga I and II currently function to 20% of their capacity, the majority of the turbines being to the stop, for lack of spare parts.

Future of the complex

Various contacts intervened recently, of which with the NEPA (Nigeria) and Westcor, consortium taken along by Eskom (South Africa), for redeployment of the complex.

Westcor projects in particular the construction of a power station Inga III (3,5 GW). In theory, with such a capacity, the complex Inga I, II, III will have an installed capacity working of more than 5,2 GW what would make it possible to feed in electricity all the Southern Africa.

Projections provide that in the long term the power produced on this site would reach 39 GW, with the project Grand Inga . As comparison, the Barrage of the Three Throats in China of a working installed capacity of 18,2 GW will produce 84,7 TWh in 2009.
