Informal sector in Senegal
As in good of other countries of Africa, the informal sector occupies a very important place in the economy of Senegal. Indeed, a significant fraction of the population lives of what one would call elsewhere of the “odd jobs”. According to a recent study of the the World Bank, this sector would generate 97% of job creations in a country very touched by unemployment.
These activities escape any type of imposition, control or even simply of enumeration.
Definition
Concept of Informal sector (or " sector not structuré") is defined by the International organization of work (ILO).Seven criteria characterize this economy in margin of the traditional production of goods and services:
- * accessibility to the activities,
- * use of local resources,
- * family property of the companies,
- * restricted scale of the operations,
- * use of simple techniques and reduced number of workers,
- * qualifications acquired apart from the official school system,
- * gone escaping any payment and opened with competition
- * use of local resources,
Place in the economy of the country
With the State, it is the principal provider of employment and the first source of revenue.Its share was slightly reduced to the wire of time. Today the activity of more than one Senegalese worker out of two changing of the informal sector. This rate is however lower than that of the whole of the sub-Saharan Africa (68%).
Beyond the statistics, one recognizes a great vitality to him.
Not being able to fight face such a dynamic and omnipresent sector, the State rather tries to encourage these workers to enter small legality in order to profit from the welfare benefits and the modes of retirement.
Principal spheres of activities
Certain professions are hardly concerned, because they are controls by precise texts. It is the case of health, the insurance, the administration, the careers of teaching.On the other hand fishing, the small shop, the craft industry concerns the informal economy essentially.
The women and the children are particularly concerned.
The abstract Récupération of waste is sometimes diverted towards artistic creation. Thus cans or iron wire are used to make small-scale models of cars or bicycles sold to the tourists.
