Infantry

The infantry indicates the whole of the military units having to fight with foot, the Soldat being called infantryman . The word is borrowed of Italian infanteria , derived from infante (child) which took at the 14th century the direction of “young person Soldat, infantryman”.

The Marines specifically indicates the troops of infantry of the Navy, usually on-board of the ships.

The infantry (Army) can be brought by various means on the place of the engagements:

  • the troops of the motorized infantry move and fight with foot or are transported by vehicle with wheels (armor-plated or not) on the place of the battle; they do not have freight vehicles armor-plated to support their progression;
  • the troops of the mechanized infantry are transported by tracked armor-plated freight vehicles and accompany the progression by the armoured tanks in order to reduce the pockets of resistance which would block the passage of the heavy tanks;
  • by air: airborne units (planes or helicopters of transport of troops, sailplanes), or units Parachutist S, trained to carry out special missions in enemy ground.

It is different traditionally from the Cavalerie, even if there were units of assembled infantry, troops moving with horse, but combatant with foot.

Evolution

The evolution of the infantryman was done by the evolution of embarked technology (firearms, protective gears, of Camouflage) and the conditions of implementation (transport, motorized units).

Infantry in France

Currently, all the infantry of the Army French known as “is armoured” (except the Special forces). The three following regiments all are motorized: 1 {{er}} regiment of infantry to Sarrebourg (F), the 110 {{E}} regiment of infantry to Donaueschingen (D) belonging to the Franco-German Brigade, the 126 {{E}} regiment of infantry to Brive-the-Strapping woman. Without forgetting, regiments attached to the two armor-plated light brigades: the 2 {{E}}, 3 {{E}} RIMa of the 9th armor-plated light brigade of navy and the 21 {{E}} RIMa and the 2 {{E}} REI of the 6 {{E}} armor-plated light Brigade.

The battalions of Alpine hunters, the regiments parachutists of infantry of the troops of navy and the legion as well as the regiment of hunters parachutists all are equipped with VAB: they thus are motorized and armoured.

France launched a project of equipment of the unloaded combatant (ECAD) named CAT-LIKE, for “the infantryman with equipment and integrated connections”

The purpose of system ECAD is to support the communication within a group of combat and to inform in real-time the hierarchy on the unit of the environmental parameters. This just system of the cameras, of the radios, which requires electrical energy: the infantryman thus supports the additional weight of batteries, which limits its autonomy.
