Infants of Portugal
The title of infant or infante of Portugal ( infante and infanta of Portuguese Portugal) is granted to all the children and all the small children resulting from male of the Portuguese sovereign only after XIIIe century. Before that, the princes and the princesses of the Portuguese royal house of Burgundy were titrated king and queen like their parents, with the difference which the king their father was titrated king de Portugal, or the King, very short, and they signed queen Therese of Portugal, king Alphonse of Portugal, etc, following in that the Germanic habit inherited the kings goths still of use nowadays at the titles in German language. To notice that the Portuguese princesses were they also heiresses of the Portuguese crown in the absence of male brother, and signed the documents in this quality of queen (for girl of king) beside the king their father, of the queen, and the kings their brothers. For this reason, they were married has foreign sovereigns only when the male sucession of the crown was already assured. The word infante was carried indifferently by the princes and the princesses, it is only very late that the feminization of the title for the princesses occurred, infanta.
Princes of Portugal
With Alphonse V of Portugal, the title of very short Prince, or Princess, is given of exclusiveness to the crown princes to the crown in hot line. If the heir or the heiress of the reigning king were their brother, or their sister, it then had right only under infant, and the succession was in this case to be there ratified by the States of the kingdom assembled. First Prince de Portugal was the future Jean II of Portugal, first absolute monarch of Portugal, which inaugurated the modern Age and remains in the History called the Prince Parfait (Príncipe Perfeito). His/her sister, Sainte Jeanne Princesse (Santa Joanna Princesa) was declared heiress of the kingdom, and took the title of Princess, before refusing all offers of marriage, and choosing the way of holiness as founder of the convent of Aveiro, where it becomes nun.
Princes of Brazil and Dukes of Bragance
To the advent of Jean IV of Portugal, in 1640, was given to the crown prince Dom Teodósio the title to Prince of Brazil, just like the title of duke of Bragance and the goods of the House of Bragance which had been appanage of his/her father before the revolution which carried it on the throne of Habsbourg. The other princes will remain infants, except when they married with the Princess heiress, or it took title of prince too them. The title and the goods of the House of Bragance thus became exclusive of the crown prince, who released them while going up on the throne. This physical separation between the royal House and the ducal House makes that the Crown prince to Portugal, after the end of Monarchy, just like the applicants with the Portuguese throne, bear the name of Duke of Bragance.
Prince Royal and Prince de Beira
With the advent of Jean V of Portugal, to the crown prince, elder to the Prince of Brazil heir, was conferred for always the title of Prince de Beira (Príncipe de Beira). With the rise in the principality of Brazil to the row of kingdom of Brazil, in 1815, the heir taken the title to Prince Royal of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves (Algarves being the European kingdom of this name, Portuguese Morocco called Algarve overseas, and African and Asian colonies). The elder one of Prince Royal (Príncipe Real), title which remained of use until 1910, remained titrated Prince de Beira. Brazil kingdom had its infants, until the proclamation of the Empire, or all Bragance Brazilian were titrated princes, and the heir to the crown, Prince Impérial. Thus, Marie II of Portugal had been born Princesse from Beira, becomes infante with the birth of her brother Pierre II, then princess of Brazil to independence, then titrated Princesse of Grão-Pará like heiress as a second of Brazil, for finally becoming queen of Portugal at the end of the Portuguese civil war.
Dukes of Bragance and Princes de Beira
Currently the heir to the Portuguese crown déchue, Dom Duarte de Bragança, which is Prince Royal of Portugal, carries the title of Duke of exclusive Bragance of the heir, and his child heir Dom Afonso de Santa Maria de Bragança that to Prince de Beira. These titles are recognized socially, and of official use at the Protocol of the Portuguese Republic, whose Government recently internationally defended them against their undue use by an Italian mistificator, Rosario Poidimani, since then imprisoned in Italy. His brothers the duke of Viseu and the duke of Coimbre, his aunt the princess Gave Maria Adelaide of Bragança, and his/her two other children, Dona Maria Francisca and the duke of Oporto, carries them titrates it and the quality of infants of Portugal.
Infants of Portugal are Altesses Sérenissimes, or Highnesses very short. The title of Royal Highness being exclusive for the princes and the princesses of Portugal, only heirs to the crown, it is currently exclusive for the Duke of Bragance, chief of the Portuguese royal House, for the Duchess, and their son Prince de Beira.
