Other ethnos groups name it amboanala (forest dog) because of its eyes, its muzzle and its cry which evokes the howl of canine, but Indri is purely herbivorous. It has large members and a black and white peeling (belly, thighs and arms white, back, head and ends of the black members) and measures adult 75cm and contrary to the other lemurs, it has only one stub of tail (3 cm with more).

It is a species endangered by the reduction at Madagascar of its habitat, the rain forest, one can however hear and observe groups of indris as well as other species of lemurs in the reserve of Périnet.
