Indra (इन्द्र) - force, courage, power - is one of the principal gods of the Hindouisme, divinity of the war, the supreme leader of the devas. Its importance became less in the late hindouism, compared with those of Vishnu and Shiva. Indra resides on the Mont Meru.
The weapon of Indra, that which it uses to cut down Vritra, the dryness, is the flash Vajra, but it uses also its magic arc, Shakradhanus , the rainbow. Its Vâhana or vehicle is Airâvata, the white elephant with four defenses which is held with the entry of Svarga, the field of the god whose capital is Amarâvatî. It is where the heroes reside after their death on the battle field and where they benefit from the spectacle of the Apsara S and the Gandharva S.
Indra is also one of the Dikpala, the guard of the east. It was probably in the beginning a solar divinity, leading a carriage gilded in the sky. Bringing water on the ground, he is sometimes venerated like a god of the fertility, the force present in the seminal substance of the living beings, being able to bring back to the life the dead soldiers on the battle field.
His wife is Indrânî, of which it killed the father, Puloman. It has as a descent Jayanta, Midhusa, Nilambara, Ribhus, Rsabha, Sitragupta and Arjuna whose mother is Kuntî.

In late mythology, Indra is represented like a muscular young man with the red skin, having four very long arms sometimes.
It is known in the Bouddhisme under the name of Shakra (Shaka in Pâli) or compared to the Bodhisattva Vajrapani. It is one of the major characters of the Jâtaka.
