Indian Railroads
The Indian railroads ( Indian Railways or IR ) indicate the State enterprise which exploits the Railway network India. It is one of the most important rail networks of the world as well by the extent of the network as by its activity. It transports each year 4,2 billion travellers and more than 300 million tons of goods on 100 000 Kilometer S of lines. The Indian railroads are also the first civil employer of the world with a manpower of more than 1,6 million permanent employees
The railroads in India are directly attached to the ministry for the railroads.
History
The first railway line in India was open the April 16th 1853 between Bombay and Thane on a distance of 21 miles, when James Dalhousie was General governor of India
