India Catalina

L' India Catalina is a historical character of Colombia which was converted at the time of its childhood to the Christianisme for being later used by Pedro de Heredia in the colonization of Carthagène, its case is similar to that of Malinche of the Mexico.

History

According to the accounts which relate to this time, the founder of the city, Pedro de Heredia, with the head of the Spanish troops, would have captured a young Indian of the tribe of the Calamari , India Catalina, to be used to him of guide and interpreter. India Catalina is presented like the pacificatory intermediary between Spanish troops and Indian populations. Thus it was also qualified d' India lengua .

Today, the tourist booklets present it like the symbol of the raza nativa .

Monument

The monument in India Catalina is in the town of Carthagène in Colombia, it was set up by Eladio Gil Zambrana and inaugurated the March 9th 1974, the Statue was reproduced starting from the statuette created by Héctor " Tito" Lombana in 1960 which is offered to gaining Cinema festival of Carthagène. The model of the monument is Judith Arrieta at 15 years (born in San Juan Nepomuceno) for the bust and the face.

Until September 2006 the statue was with the intersection of the avenue Pedro de Heredia and the Venezuela avenue from where it was moved of 12  m to allow the passage of the massive transport system Transcaribe , this transfer gave place to a walk of protests of the inhabitants of the city including even Eladio Gil, the sculptor of the statue.
