Indexed sequential organization
The indexed sequential organization is a mode of organization of the Fichier S which allows a Sequential access and a chance Access to the recording S of the file.
This mode of organization was frequently used before the appearance of the databases. Databases today are used when one wants to reach in various ways the recordings of a file (see SQL, ODBC…).
It is important to distinguish
-
on the one hand access mode which is the way of writing or to read the recordings of a file (examples of access modes are the Sequential access and the chance Access);
-
in addition the organization of the files which is the way of structuring a file to facilitate one or the other of the access modes to the recordings (of the examples of organizations are the sequential organization, the indexed sequential organization, the random organization, the organization in tree structure and the organization out of ring).
