Geography
History
On the territory of the commune, remains some not easily interpretable vestiges of the castle of Chauvilliers, old seigniory of évêché of Basle. This seigniory shared the destiny of the châtellenie of Saint-Ursanne (Swiss). It was committed with the admiral Jean of Vienna (lord of Roulans) of 1376 to 1384, at the town of Basle of 1384 to 1388, with the lords de Neuchâtel in Burgundy of 1388 to 1426, then with the count of the Rock (in mountain) of 1426 to 1436.
The castle had been built in XIIIe century to protect the grounds from évêché from Basle vis-a-vis the County. Besieged and partially ruined by the Flayers in 1444, then by the Burgundian ones in 1475, taken again shortly after by Confederated, it was definitively destroyed by the French in 1637.
Nowadays, only the large ditch cut in the rock lets imagine its size last. François RIZZON
