Independent cinema

The independent cinema is a type of Cinéma being opposed to the Blockbuster S.

It is often defined by less important budgets, since it is produced and financed by companies which are not related to great audio-visual groups. It also encounters difficulties of Distribution in the cinemas and of visibility in the media for the same reasons. The positive side of this form of production is a greater artistic freedom and a greater taking risk (and thus of innovation) in the realization, the subjects tackled, the tone, the choice of distribution etc

In France, it is defended by ACID (Agency for the Independent Cinema and its Diffusion). There exist several chains of independent cinema such as for example the cinemas Utopia.

To the the United States, one often opposes Hollywood cinema and New Yorkean independent cinema.

Each year takes place in Utah the Festival of film of Sundance, the American festival of independent film. Created in 1978, it is organized since 1985 by the Sundance Institute, a non-profit organization created in 1981 by Robert Redford.
