Incheon (인천광역시) is a harbor city Korean located at 50 km in the west of Seoul, on the Yellow Mer. It counted in 2000 2.466.338 inhabitants. It constitutes, like Seoul, a special province with it only. Being the port nearest to Seoul, it drains an important maritime traffic . The open Aéroport international in 2001 on an island extended artificially in the vicinity (see International airport of Incheon) is also that which serves Seoul.
History
The settlement of this zone is established as of the Neolithic era. In 372 and 475 it was the starting point of Korean diplomatic missions towards China. During the Dynasty Goryeo (고려), the government found refuge during the Mongolian invasion there, on a site which shows today remainders of the period Jeoson (조선) (about 1700). At the time modern the importance of Incheon comes from the estuary where it is located, allowing a good harbor establishment. When the current port was founded in 1883 population of the city, which was called then Chemulpo was only of 4700 inhabitants.
During the War of Korea, Incheon (Inchon) was the site of the unloading " Inchon Landing" (인천상륙작전) of a force amphibian of the O.N.U on September 15th, 1950 (operation chromite ), aiming at creating a second face to relieve the pressure on the Perimeter of Pusan, then with launching a counter-offensive towards north.
Geography
The urban perimeter occupies a surface of 9645 km ², including 21% occupied by rice plantations and 44% by wooded areas. Incheon is often regarded as suburbs of Seoul, because it of it is close; the systems of subways of the two cities are inter-connected.
