Inaos

A Inaos (イナウ) is a wood talisman carved with planks by Aïnus (minority Ethnie of the Japan).

Aïnus carve inaos to protect, or stop a problem. These inaos is talismans and each inaos is manufactured with an aim: to protect from the diseases, to make good hunting, and to even find a lost object. Each inaos having a quite precise utility, one finds a very great number of inaos in the cise (houses aïnues).

Except if a childbirth or a death took place there, in which case alone the inaos around the hearth are preserved. Because, if the bear is the most crowned animal spirits, the most important divinity with the Pantheon Aïnu, is " Apehuci-Kamuy ", God of Fire. Each cise (house aïnue) shelters in its center a hearth (to heat themselves and cook) and around their fire, Aïnus have the inaos created to thank Apehuci-Kamuy and protect the hearth, in order to “not contaminate fire”.
