Plouarzel , ( Breton Plouarzhel in ) is a common department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France.

Its inhabitants are called the Plouarzelistes .

Geography

Plouarzel is the most Western commune of continental France (see the list of extreme points of France)

The Pointe of Corsen located on the territory of the commune is the most Western point of continental France (4°47' 47" of western longitude). It is there that an Operational regional center of surveillance and of Rescue (C.R.O.S.S. Corsen) is, which supervises the sea traffic along the coasts between the Mount Saint-Michel and the Point of Penmarc' h.

The headlight of Trézien and its 182 steps, are aligned on the fire of Kermorvan and thus make it possible to the sailors to cross the channel of the Furnace without encumber.

History

  • At the 16th century, Plouarzel belonged to the seneschalsy of Brest and Saint-Renan.

  • Five wind mills were built in 2000. Each wind mill consists of an aerogenerator of 660 KWatts and a rotor 47 meters in diameter assembled on a mast of 40 meters.
  • the menhir of Kerloas is most of France, with 9,50 meters. It measured even 12 meters before being decapitated by the lightning.
