In partibus infidelium
In partibus infidelium , i.e. “in the regions of the infidels” in Latin - often shortened in in partibus - is an honorary title indicating an old episcopal see of the Church, from now on disappeared, often located in North Africa, with the the Middle East or in Greece. Although without faithful, the bishop in partibus is crowned, the title being given him to justify its rise with the row in bishop. He can then be called with administrative offices within the Roman Curie or of the Diplomatie vaticane. The bishops in partibus are often affected like Coadjuteur S (assistants) of the bishop in load of an ordinary seat. These coadjutors have the role to succeed the bishop in title and await in patience the skin of their predecessor. There are as well archbishop's palaces in partibus .
One prefers today to speak about “titular bishop” rather than of “bishop in partibus ”.
