Controversies

This film is drawn from a series of books written by the British author Philip Pullman. The book criticizes the public worship hard, in particular that of the Roman Catholic church. In these books, the evoked principal harmful effect is Magistère of the Church worked out by the Cardinals and the Pope.

The filmic version considerably attenuated the contents original anticlerical, which delighted the Catholic League in the United States, and conversely caused the protests of the fans of the series. It is about a super production which is addressed mainly to the children and is classified like a family film. The history is presented in an innocent way, with spectacular special effects, in the form of a tale for children.

Concern relates to the bond with the books: “The stories of Pullman are a means for him of communicating what he thinks of the Christian Church, the Christian doctrines and Christian morals. Its hostility becomes explicit as the series progresses, some of the elements more the anti-Christians emerging in the last books. It is not a series which we want to take with light” indicates the apologist Anthony Horvath. The children who will have appreciated film will be probably tempted then to read the books (and probably to buy all the series). He recalls that the series tells the history of a young girl determined to kill God, introduced like liar and mortal, in order to release the world of his tyranny.
