In Memory off Nikki Arane

In Memory off Nikki Arane is a disc of improvisation of the guitarist Eugene Chadbourne and the saxophonist John Zorn, recorded with New York in 1980. The disc is published at the label Incus.

Topic and form

The title ( In the memory of Nikki Arane in French) refers to the character played by Timothy Carey in the film the Ultimate Raid (1956) of Stanley Kubrick. Nikki Arane is a marksman from which the mission is to descend a horse during a horse-race in order to create a diversion.

The four improvisations which compose this disc are of a very radical form. The two musicians set up a dialog based on the repetition, the variation and the reaction, between silence and noise - between inaudible and amazing. Indeed, all the instruments used (saxophones, clarinets, electric guitars and acoustics), sound in a new and often brutal way, the principal idea of work being to imitate the actions of the character.
