In God We Trust
in God We Trust (“ As a God we believe ”) one of both national currencies of the the United States of America and is adopted like such since 1956. The other, it [[E Pluribus Unum]] , “Of several one”, is always employed usually. in God We Trust figure on all tickets and all the coins American, but this presence was generalized only in a rather recent way.
History
In in [[The Banner Star-Spangled]] , written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key, but which was adopted like official anthem only in 1931, the last Towards known as: in And this Be our motto: “In God is our trust”. (“And this will be our currency: “In a God we believe”” ).It seems that the rise of the religious feeling, which leads to the choice of such a currency, takes its origin in the traumatism of the American Civil War. It is at that time that Salmon P. Chase, Secrétaire of the Treasury, received a great claiming number of letters of very pious people that the name of God is reproduced on the currencies of the Union. He writes in his turn in 1861 with James Pollock, director of the United States Mint with Philadelphia (which strikes the currencies), to ask him to find a currency pious to affix with the American coins:
- “ in Dear Sir: No nation edge Be strong except in the strength off God, gold safe except in His defense. The trust off our people in God should national Be declared one our corners ”
- Dear Mister: No nation can be strong except in the force of God, nor sure except in Its protection. The belief as a God of our citizens should be declared on our national parts.
In 1863, James Pollock submits to Salmon P. Chase several proposals for currencies, but it is Chase which will find the sentence final: in God We Trust .
After the agreement of the Congress, the currency appears for the first time on the part of 2 hundreds struck in 1864. That will extend to several other parts, but not in a systematic and continuous way. For example, from 1883 with 1938, the formula disappears from the parts of 5 hundreds and is forgotten on many others. Since 1938, all the American coins carry the inscription in God We Trust .
It is only in 1956 that the American Congress votes a Loi (approved by the President the July 30th of the same year) making in God We Trust one of the national currencies which, for this reason, will appear thereafter on all the currencies (starting from 1957) and banknotes (during the time of 1964 with 1966.)
Controversies
The currency in God We Trust had and has always detractors in the United States, for political reasons, histories but such religious:
- political, because such a currency symbolically denies the Separation of the Church and the State;
- historical, because it is allowed today that the generalization of the currency is before a a whole reaction, within the framework of the Cold war, with the Soviet Athéisme ;
- religious, since for many believers (such as for example Theodore Roosevelt), to put the name of God on something of as commonplace as a currency concerns the Blasphème.
