Imre Kertész
Imre Kertész (, born with Budapest the November 9th 1929) is a Hungarian writer.
Biography
Born in a modest Jewish family (her father is wood merchant and its small mother employed), it is off-set with Auschwitz in 1944, at the 15 years age, then transferred to Buchenwald. This painful experiment marks it deeply and will nourish all its work.Returned to Hungary, in 1945, it is only found, all the members of its family having disappeared. In 1948, it starts to work as journalist. But its newspaper becomes in 1951 the official body of the Communist party, and Kertész is laid off. He then works some time in a factory, then at the press service of the ministry for Industry.
Congédié in 1953, it is devoted consequently to the writing and the translation. Starting from the end of the year 1950 and throughout the years 1960, it writes musical comedies to earn its living. It translates many authors of German language, such as Nietzsche, Hofmannsthal, Schnitzler, Freud, Roth, Wittgenstein and Canetti, which had an influence on its literary creation. In the years 1960, it starts to write Être without destiny , account of the life of a young Hungarian deportee, of largely autobiographical inspiration. This novel could appear only in 1975 and received initially only one rather modest reception. It is only after its republication, in 1985, which he knew success.
Held with the variation by the Communist regime, Kertész started to be recognized like a great writer only at the end of the Eighties. It obtained in 2002 the Nobel Prize of literature, “for a work which draws up the fragile experiment of the individual against the arbitrary barbarian of the history”.
