Imposition

Of Printing works, the imposition consists in placing on a large sheet (the form) the pages of a work in order to obtain a Cahier during its folding. The forms of imposition are generally composed of 4,8,16 or 32 installations and are managed in signature S (Recto and back). The pages are then managed two to two.

For a book of 16 pages, for example, the software of imposition will assemble pages 16 and 1 whole for the recto, then 2 and 15 for the back, and so on. The method of binding determines the mode of imposition (head with head, head with foot). To make imposition, it is necessary:

to know the finished format;
to know the format of the printed sheet;
to calculate empagement by taking account of the category;
to know the printing machine and its catch of grips;
to envisage the distribution of the elements to be imposed;
and finally to envisage the various shapings and completions.
