Immortal

Immortal is a group of Black metal Norwegian, considered as one of the best representatives of the kind, one most respected of and also, one of the founders.

Biography

Immortal is a Norwegian group now mythical. Immortal is a group with whole share in the scene Black Metal, and the group influenced a great number of groups to its continuation. In addition, it always diverted its fans, each album being different from the precedents. Moreover, Immortal has its " griffe" : one will easily recognize the group with his fronts of guitar, with the play of battery and especially, with the dark, monolithic voice and with the so singular stamp of his leader, Abbath.

Immortal began as a group from Death metal in autumn 1990 with Bergen in Norway. The founding members, Demonaz (Harald Nævdal) and Abbath (Olve Eikemo) recorded two demonstrations under the name “Amputation”, and changed name for “Immortal” into 1991. Their third demonstration, Unholy Forces off Evil , testifies to their turn towards the Black metal. This one left the same year on the French label Listenable Records. Immortal in is then with its stammerings, although the musicians are tested, to have before played together within the group Old Funeral. However, they will seek some time and will leave a phenomenal disc in 1992, tinted very dark environments, with an occult bottom with perfectly retranscribed wish: it is the time of Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism , a opus in charge of rancour, typically Black Metal, with a binary battery, black fronts and without the least ounce of beauty… A sincerely mystical album containing some pearls already. Immortal, that feel, are then largely influenced by the Swedes of Bathory, although bitten group know that Immortal has already its own musical identity. the last title, with its intro and its outro with the guitar dries, is a true masterpiece. In fact, already, the northerners of Osmosis Productions finance the album.

Immortal does not wait more than that until the powder does not fall down. In 1993, the group leaves an album even more " culte" that the precedent. A work of fury, icy, very fast: nothing or almost to see with the preceding disc! It is about Pure Holocaust . The album is short, it is composed of only eight titles, but they are almost all to retain: the first " Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss" , the third and magic " The Sun No To skirt Rises" , the fifth " Storming Through Red Clouds and Holocaustwinds" or the two last, " Ace The Eternity Opens" and especially, " Pure Holocaust" , him also a true wonder.

With its first two albums out of pocket, Immortal becomes the first group of black metal in the world to be left in international round: one blessed time which makes known Immortal in the whole world and which proves with all that Immortal is a formation of scene and that Black Metal - finally, a certain style of Black Metal - can be interpreted.

From return to Bergen, their birthplace, the assistants recover to work. Obviously, Immortal does not reproduce the same receipt… But goes still further! The Norwegians leave an amazing disc which makes date since: Battles in the North . One finds there ten titles played at infernal intervals (the " blasts beats" are exploited on the first nine titles, in background music, giving a tension to the unit), even faster than on the preceding album. The lines of guitars are in addition even more complex and especially, the production seems bad, very bad… This artistic effect - which must help with better feeling the effect of the winds of the Great North-East very badly perceived at the time, in 1995. However, Immortal has just manufactured there an amazing disc with violence, with a sound as ever nobody had heard the similar one until there! The last title Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) is to be retained, for its majestuosity and its slower rate/rhythm: a true joy for the ears and the preferred piece of all, admirors or not, of the disc…

But Immortal does not stop in if good way!

Immortal waits until 1997 and leaves Blizzard Beasts , their shortest disc. This time, the production is rather bad and the group will want to be some thereafter. It is with the hinge of their career. Blizzard Beasts varies the tempos, but it is necessary to pose an attentive ear to realize some! It is also the first disc with their Horgh beater: an innovation, since until there, in studio, Abbath played of low and made the song and the battery!

Only, the music of the group will change forever shortly after. In 1997, an annoying event will have a great impact on the future of the group - the principal guitarist and lyric writer of the group, Demonaz, is wounded with the hand and is unable to continue to play. Demonaz nevertheless continues to write while the bass player and Chant or Abbath deals with the guitar. The change proves to be beneficial because Immortal launches off At the Heart Winter in 1999, album that much regards as their best disc. The opus sounds Heavy Black Metal , i.e. it always has will have it dark and malefic beginnings, fronts typical and play of battery simplified of the kind, but that the guitar plays of sonorities plus Heavy Metal. Incomparably, Immortal changed style with Abbath with the guitar (which nevertheless recorded itself the low one!). The disc is a resounding success on all the continents. Immortal will turn of more beautiful!

The last album in collaboration with the mythical label of Osmosis Productions follows: Damned in Black in 2000. This one is more " carré" , less dark and more modern, it has more developed and air rhythmic parts and always this its characteristic Heavy. It is not for as much not the best disc of the group, although it is appreciated of all - Immortal having widened its audience with preceding wafer considerably! But Damned in Black announces well the masterpiece which will follow…

Between 2002, Immortal signs with a label of greater capacity: Nuclear Blast . Many fans see a treachery there, thinking that the group signs for the money! But will never know any us nothing on behalf of the members group. On this new label, Immortal leaves its last and seventh disc: Sounds off Northern Darkness . This one is a skilful mixture of the kinds last and present: one there finds titles very fast and square, returns-inside and solid masses, as well as heavier pieces, plus mid-tempos, more " Heavy". In addition, the guitar takes a very icy crystalline accent, very " nordique" , which gives an invaluable side to the unit which in the final analysis gives an impression of mastodon! Though one can think of this album, it is truly a masterpiece, since it gathers the best of all the history of the group! In 2003, the group separated on personal grounds. The " group was thought; mort" , but Immortal reappears to reform in 2006 simply, for a series in concerts apparently, even if the fans of the group would like to see being born a new album studio. The group carried out its return to the stage for the 18th edition of the Wacken Open Air in August 2007 as well as the Hellfest of Clisson (France) in June 2007.

Abbath also composed with its group I an excellent album of " Blackened Heavy Metal" , heading Between Two Worlds , which is very resembling stylistiquement with what the guitarist/singer made on the last achievements…

Immortal announced little time ago a new entry in studio for one 8th album at the end of its round (which should finish at the end of August 2007). The fans impatiently await this new album of the Norwegian group which will certainly not disappoint us.
