Imerina

Imerina is the traditional name of the country Merina, occupying the northern part of the center of Madagascar. The complete name of this country, given (or rather officialized) by the king Ralambo to the 16th century was at the Imerina-Ambaniandro beginning.

The " i" initial can be, that is to say a nominal article, as it is the case in many Langues austronésiennes (Balinese: I Nyoman, Bugis: I Galigo), is a mark of the locative (" di " in Malayan).

From the completion of its unification under the reign of Andrianampoinimerina, Imerina is lived divided into six large provinces or toko :

  1. the Avaradrano occupying the north-eastern angle with for capital Ambohimanga.

  2. the Vonizongo, occupying the north-western angle with Fihaonana like capital.
  3. the Marovatana, located at the south of Vonizongo, with Ambohidratrimo like capital.
  4. the Ambodirano, located at the south of Marovatana, with for capital Fenoarivo.
  5. the Vakinisisaony (or Vakinisaony) in the south of Avaradrano with for capital Alasora and then Andramasina.
  6. the Vakinankaratra in the south with Betafo like capital.

In the medium a special place occupied, as capital of the Kingdom, the town of Tananarive.

With these six provinces was added a little special territory of Imamo in the west, sometimes attached to Ambodirano, sometimes considered with share, because of its historical characteristic.
