Imago

See also: Imago (homonymy)

The term of imago (with the masculine) indicates the final stage of the development of a Insecte Ptérygote, having carried out its metamorphosis. It is also about the reproductive adult stage, in opposition to the larval stages which, except particular cases, are not able to carry out the reproduction.

The imago is characterized by the development of the wings (except at the species secondarily apterous) and of the genital apparatus.

The moult which ends in the imago is known as imaginale . In certain insects, there exists an intermediate stage between the larva and the imago. It is the case of the nymph of Lépidoptères and the Coleopters or the pupe of the Dipterous ones. It is also the case of the " Subimago " in certain watery insects, like the transitory S (imago and sub-imago are the two stages preferentially imitated by the fishing with the fly dries).
