Ilulissat

Ilulissat (in) is a city of the Greenland, the third in term of population. Populated: 4533 inhabitants and of a surface of approximately 47000 km2, it is by, on the west coast of Greenland, in the Baie of Disko.

History

The archeological site of Sermermiut is one of most important of Greenland. It comprises vestiges of the cultures Saqqaq, Dorset and Thulé.

The area of Ilulissat was important a zone of hunting, named Nordrseta, for the Vikings between the 10th century and the arrival of the Inuits at the 13th century.

Before the arrival of Europeans at the 17th century, Sermermiut was an important camping inuit of approximately 250 hearts. The modern city was built by missionaries in 1741.
