Ilmor
Ilmor is a British manufacturer, specialized in the design of engines of race. Ilmor in particular was present in Formule 1 of 1991 at 1994 pennies its proper name, then of 1995 to 2005 as a partner of Mercedes-Benz, which was the principal shareholder, before repurchasing part of the company completely. The remaining part of Ilmor is an independent company today.
History
Ilmor is a company founded in 1984, by Switzerland Mario Illien and the British Paul Morgan, two former engineers from Cosworth. They are the first syllables of their patronyms which gave its name to the company thus created. At the origin specialized in the design of engines in the championship CART, Ilmor launched out in Formula 1 to leave 1991 with the stable Leyton-House (become again March in 1992), then Tyrrell in 1992. In 1993, Ilmor equips the Swiss stable Sauber, while Mercedes-Benz (at the origin of the project Sauber F1) repurchases 10% of Ilmor. In 1994, the Ilmor engine is officially called besides Mercedes-Benz on the cap of Sauber. In parallel, Ilmor also equips the modest stable Pacific Racing, with engines of the preceding year. From 1995, Mercedes-Benz leaves Sauber to join McLaren. Logically, Mercedes-Benz continues to rest on Ilmor for the design of the engines. Ilmor thus gains its first victory with the Grand Prix of Australia 1997, before making it possible Mika Hakkinen to gain the titles 1998 and 1999, and at McLaren-Mercedes to be champion manufacturer in 1998. In 2002, one year after the accidental death of Paul Morgan, Mercedes-Benz takes the control of Ilmor to a total value of 55%, and re-elects the Mercedes-Ilmor company. Then, in 2005, Mercedes-Benz completely repurchases the department Formule 1 of Ilmor, which becomes Mercedes-Benz High Performance Ltd Engines. On the other hand, the part Ilmor Engineering (implied in particular in the United States in the design of the engines Honda of the championship IRL) finds its independence, with its founder Mario Illien at her head.
