Illzach

Illzach is a common French located in the northern suburbs of Mulhouse. It belongs to the department Haut-Rhin and area Alsace.

Its inhabitants is called the Illzachois and the Illzachoises .

The town of Illzach is the fifth city of the department of the Haut-Rhin and a major element of the Mulhousian agglomeration. Located in the North-East of France, near the German and Swiss borders easily accessible by the highways A35 and A36, it extends on a surface from 7.5 km ².

The commune includes/understands the district of Modenheim.

History

  • Important center Gallic, then Roman (with thermal baths), strengthened at the Lower Empire.
  • Necropolis of the garrison of cruel auxiliaries (5th century).
  • the legend tells that three outgoing Illzachois of a restaurant of the city and who had drunk too much decided to go to fish the moon in Ill, using an umbrella. Those did not pass unperceived and Illzachois were called the " fishermen of lune".
