Anecdote

The title of the collection refers to a out-of-date direction of the word “illumination”, to take here in the direction of “Enluminure”. From where precision of Paul Verlaine in the note accompanying the original edition by work: “ the word Illuminations is English and wants to say colored engravings, - colored punts: it is even the subtitle which Mr. Rimbaud had given to his manuscript ”, according to saying it of Verlaine which arranged as that was appropriate to him reality on these famous fragments.
