Elle extends on 22,21 km ². It is located generally at the east of the Ill, which joined the the Rhine downstream a few kilometers, in Strasbourg. The commune is also crossed north in the south by the Canal of the Rhone in the Rhine.
History
Illkirch-Graffenstaden was founded at the time of the Francs. The exact date remains difficult to determine. The common one knew several names during its histoire : Ellofanum (720), Illechilechen (826), Illenkirche (845), Illekiriche (920), Illachirecha (1163), Illenkirchen (1172) and finally Illkirch which was maintained until our days. The name is due to a church ( Kirche in German) which would have been built at the edge of the Ill.
Autrefois, part of the city was vigneronne (cf street of the Vines).
Pour more information, please consult the paragraph Histoire of the article of the town of Ostwald.
Graffenstaden was a village contiguous to Illkirch. For economic reasons, the two communes were unified (between 1790 and 1794). The delimitations of Graffenstaden compared to Illkirch are less and less known.
Après the First World War, the principal industry of the city was the Alsatian Société of Mechanical engineering (SACM) which manufactured machine tools and engines. Remain still today in very restricted company Huron , manufacturing modern machine tools (Fraiseuse S) for the whole world. By far the greatest part of the large factory, “ Onseri fobrik ” (Our factory), became a shopping mall, agencies and even of allotments.
Nowadays, because of the decline of this sector due to modernization and of the imports, Illkirch-Graffenstaden rather develops the tertiary sector and the services.
