Illiers-Combray is a common French, located in the department of Eure-et-Loir and the area Center.
Ses inhabitants is the Islériens .

Toponymy

The current made up denomination was officialized the April 8th 1971, pursuant to a decree of the preceding March 29th , published the April 7th with the JORF . Previously, the commune was indicated under the name of Illiers , name remained very frequent in the current language.

It changed denomination at the time of the centenary of the birth of Marcel Proust which had described it under the name of Combray in With the research of time lost.

The origin of the name of Illiers comes from a deformation of Hilaire, Hilarius, the owner of the parish being holy Hilaire.

Geography

Illiers is located on left bank of the Loir, to 13 km of Brou, to 19 km of the Courville-on-Eure, to 20 km of Bonneval, to 21 km of Thiron Gardais, to 25 km of Chartres, to 28 km of the Magnifying glass, to 29 km of Châteaudun and to 32 km of Voves.

The locality Small Large Wood is located at 7 km in the south-west of the center.

History

“Illiers was one of oldest the baronnies Chartres-native paus, and the lord d' Illiers was one of the four barons who had the privilege to carry the new bishop of Chartres at the time of his solemn entry in the city. The lords of this family, which besides gave several bishops of her name to the diocese of Chartres, were often distinguished at the great times from our histoire  ; most remarkable is Florent d' Illiers who, in the time of the king Charles VII, was one of the most honest companions of Jeanne Darc, and contributed with Hire, Dunois and Xaintrailles, to return to the king de Bourges his old heritage which roboient to him Anglois . The walls which protected the small town disappeared for a long time, and of its antique castle there remain some traces reconnaissables.

Pendant the Franco-German war of 1870-1871, this locality underwent, as of the October 19th, the pains of the invasion and even a beginning of bombardment. ”

Economic history

Malta-brown also reported that Illiers was “one of the most active centers of trade of the département  ; that it had five annual fairs, a market, cloths, hosiery, several tileries and a rather considerable trade of grains and cattle. ”

Eight decades later, the Grand Larousse encyclopedic (vol. July 6th, th and th 1962) raised, as for him, of the activities of treatment of the flax and the mechanical engineering.

Celebrities

Marcel Proust there passed his youth, in his/her paternal aunt Elisabeth Proust (1828 - 1886), wife of the merchant Jules Amiot (1816 - 1912) and used the name of Combray in its romantic continuation With the research of time lost to describe the city.

The writer Christophe Ferré passed part of his childhood to Illiers-Combray. The main street carries the name of its back grandfather, Leon Ferré, mayor of the commune during several decades.

Site classified under the historic building by decree of the December 12th 1946. Garden classified under the historic buildings by decree of March 9th, 1999. City by the writer under the name of “park of Tansonville” in its novel.
  • Garden of the house known as of Aunt Léonie, where Marcel Proust remained. Classified under the historic buildings by decree of the October 19th 1961.
  • Frontages and roofs of the manor of Mirougrain, built in 1886. Registered on the additional Inventory of the historic buildings by decree of the July 26th 1977.
