Illiat
Illiat is a common French, located in the department of the Ain and the area the Rhone-Alps. Its inhabitants is called the Illiatis .
Geography
Illiat is to 15 km in the south of Mâcon, between the Bresse and the Dombes. Composed of wood and locality and hamlet about fifty, the habitat is dispersed. It is composed of isolated farms, surrounded by pastures and cultures.
History
The site of Illiat is occupied as of the Gallo-Roman period. An altar stone out of white marble of the 6th century testifies to this time. One finds trace of the parish of Illiat starting from 1250, where it is mentioned the Ecclésia of lllié , depend on the Diocese of Lyon. The seigniory and the parish belonged to Hugues de Saix. The castle of Pionneins was between the hands of the family of Chabeu.
Illiat is then in extreme cases of the Bresse, which belonged to the Savoy, and of the Dombes, which belonged to the lords of Beaujeu and belonged to the Burgundy. The village was cut into two; certain localities as “the Terminal”, “the Barrier” or “In Bresse” testify to this separation. Illiat is the seat of ceaseless fights, marked out episodes violent one, arrests, removals and reprisals.
The inhabitants of Illiat who lived in Dombes and worked in Bresse (or conversely) suffered from this situation, because they were thus assujetis with the Dîme and toll.
It will be necessary to await the beginning of the 17th century so that Avanon, which takes its source with pre of Combettes, is indicated like recognized border.
The village preserves today several remarkable houses and old farms.

- Church Saint-Symphorien (12th century)
A donation of the 10th century, in the chapter of Saint Vincent de Mâcon, quotes the name of Villa Podoniaco , then chief town of administrative the unit known as Ager Podiniacensis , and testifies to the old existence of the hamlet of Pionneins.
The church Saint Symphorien was built at the 12th century century. In eight centuries, Illiatis will modify several times the building without destroying the apse which remains in testimony of this distant golden age which was the 12th century century.
The most former priest of known Illiat asks, in his will of 1361, with being buried in the church and enjoint with his heirs to engrave on his tomb: " Here the tomb of Barthelemy Vurpil, formerly cleaned of Illiat is, that its heart rests in paix" .
At the 17th century, pastoral visits restore us the life of the church. In 1614, its owner is already Saint Symphorien. The abbot of Cluny is presenter of the cure. One then finds in the nave two furnace bridges, " celluy of costé of bize is the term Our lady of Pity, and the other of costé of wind is under the term Saint Pancrace" . The parish then counts 200 communicants and the church, without house curiale, is in bad condition. " The vault is in danger to fall if it is not pourveu there. The nave is almost very descarronée, the panes of icelle all ostées, the wall of front crevassée from the arc of large carries in haut" .
Another pastoral visit, in 1654, teaches us that the church is again in good state and that the parish has 300 communicants.
To the 19th century, one adds to the building two side chapels (1836). The bell-tower, novel, probably destroyed with the Revolution, are rebuilt during the lengthening of the nave in 1870.
The restoration of the chorus of the church in 1890 allowed the discovery of frescos which appear to date from the middle of the 12th century.
In the inscriptions which remain, one notices no letter of uncial form. Paintings were carried out with frescos: one observes joints of day there.
The four decorated arcades are the only elements which remain of the whole of the apse. The bottom of furnace could have received a decoration representing Christ in Majesty. The decoration seems to be read as a book from left to right.
- Castle of Pionneins
One sees each side there brick a round tower crowned of an acute arrow.
The ditches of enclosure were filled except front the southern frontage or is the main entrance. One reaches it by borrowing a splendid alley of limes.
To announce in the dependences a small house of medieval style, with half-timberings, undoubtedly built at the 19th century.
