Ilia Tchavtchavadzé

Prince Ilia Tchavtchavadzé (in géorgien ილიაჭავჭავაძე, canonized by the orthodoxe Church géorgienne under the name of holy Élie the Juste , October 27th 1837 - August 30th 1907) was an eminent figure of the new literature géorgienne, a famous public benefactor, lawyer, directing national movement of release of the Georgia in 1861-1907.

Biography

Born in 1837 in Kvareli (Georgia of the East). In 1857, it was graduate 1st traditional Gymnasium of Tbilissi (secondary studies). In 1861, Ilia Tchavtchavadzé obtained its diploma of the Faculty of Law of the university of Saint-Petersbourg (Russia).

He was the author of many remarkable works of literature géorgienne (" The ermite" , " The fantôme" , " Is the human one a man?! " , " The widow of Otar" , " Kako the voleur" , etc) and of important articles in the press. From 1863, Ilia Tchavtchavadzé became the founder and the writer-in-chief of periodicals public and political " Sakartvelos Moambe" (1863-1877) and " Iveria" (1877-1905).

In addition to its works described herebefore, he was also the founder and leader of several public organizations, culture and education (" Company for the diffusion of the literature among Géorgiens" , " Bench of the noblesse" , " Company of art dramatique" , " Historico-ethnographic company of Géorgie" , etc). He was also a British translator of literature. Its principal literary works were translated and published in French, English, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Belorusse, Russian and other languages. Between 1906 and 1907, he was member of the Council of State (Gosudarstvennaya Duma) of the Russian Empire. Its great ecclectism led it to be also member of the Caucasian Committee of the Geographical Company of Russia, the Company of Ethnography and Anthropology of the Université of Moscow, the Company of the Orientalists of Russia, literary Company Anglo-Russe (London), etc

August 30th, 1907 Ilia Tchavtchavadzé was assassinated by Bolsheviks géorgiens. In 1987, it was canonized by the church Orthodoxe and Apostolic of Georgia.
