Iguana

The iguana is a reptile semi Arboricole terrestrial or marine. It is a Végétarien which nourishes sometimes small invertebrates.

The iguana lives mainly in South America although there are two kinds with Madagascar and islands Fiji. Its scaly skin is of a color more or less enabling him to melt themselves in the landscape and thus to escape its predatory.

Iguanas are traditionally driven out for their flesh in Amazonia, and are the subject of a traffic bound for some terrariophiles.
D' others are high out of aquarium out of glass or terrarium where they are nourished with for example Zucchini, cress and Pissenlit. But also of the crickets, the locust and other kinds of insects. This animal is disadvised to the beginners in terrariophilie. Measuring of 1 meter 50 to 2 meters once adult, one needs a spatieux terrarium of at least 3m (L) 2m (L) and 2m (H) and conditions which one can seldom join together.

Not to confuse

  • Iguana iguana : the green Iguana, more running with its striped tail and its gross " écaille" in lower part of the eye and,
  • Iguana delicatissima : the West-Indian, smaller Iguana and in danger of extinction is an endemic species being able to measure until 1,60  Mr. the archipelago of Petite Ground which depends on the Guadeloupe would only shelter with him 1/3 of the total population estimated at 9500  individuals. Their genetic characteristics would make a rather pure colony of it whereas elsewhere, the populations are very hybridées by the green iguana of Central America.

These 2 species are completely protected since 1989.
