Ignace Urbain Jean Cap , older brother of Claude Chappe, was born in 1760 with Rouen, where his/her father filled a higher employment in the administration of the fields.

Biography

After having studied the right, it acquired a place in finances, which it lost with the French revolution, which did not prevent it from adopting the principles of them. He was elected prosecutor-syndic of the city of the Mans, and, little time, was afterwards appointed the Sarthe with the legislative assembled . The brothers Cap having obtained, towards the end of 1791, the authorization to renew their experiments, placed initially their machine on one of the houses of the barrier of Star; but it was reversed and broken during the night. Six months afterwards, they raised of them another with Ménilmontant in the park Saint-Fargeau. This time the blinder rabble still put to you fire at it. They did not continue of them less their tests: ; and when they had stopped the shape of the telegraph definitively, iïs submitted it to the National Assembly, in the meeting of the March 22nd 1792. The events which followed delayed the reports/ratios which they requested on the utility of their discovery; and it was only the April 4th 1795 which they were authorized to make build three stations of test.

All the results having confirmed breadth deserves of their invention, a first telegraph line, established Paris with Lille, was finished at the end of 1794. It was prolonged until Dunkirk in 1798, then until Brussels, and finally Antwerp and Amsterdam. One second line, that of Paris with Strasbourg, was carried out have 1797. Later, it was prolonged until Huningue, and in 1813, with the approaches of the invasion, a junction was established of Metz to Mainz. A third line was built in 1798 of Paris with Brest, and a fourth in 1799 of Paris with Lyon, continued in 1805 until Turin and Milan, and in 1809 until Venice. In 1814, the part of this line which extended from Lyon to Venice was removed, but it was replaced by that of Lyon with Toulon. Lastly, a line of Paris with Bayonne was in activity starting from 1825.

In 1808, Abraham Cap, one of the four brothers the inventor, was attached the general staff of the emperor, to establish a mobile military telegraphy, project to which it was not given enough a continuation. Cap elder the and Pierre Chappe had been appointed administrators of the telegraph lines with their Claude brother; with died of this one, arrived in 1803, the two first only remained in charge of these functions. Cap the elder one accepted in 1815 the cross of the Ordre of the Meeting, and in 1811 that of the Légion of honor. In one put it at the retirement, like Pierre Chappe, and one replaced them by their two brothers Rene and Abraham, who had taken the more active share ia with the first research of the inventor. Cap the elder one died in 1828.

In this curious work, the author treats various attempts forwarded by the old ones to quickly transmit advertisements to long distances; French telegraph, obstacles which the inventors tested to make it adopt; and finally of the telegraphs established subsequently in Germany, Sweden, England, Russia, Turkey and Egypt, as well as various writings published on this discovery.
