Ifriqiya

The Ifriqiya (rear RTL افريقية), also spelled Ifriqiyya , is the territory of North Africa for the period of the Western Moyen-âge, which corresponds to the provinces of Roman Africa in the late Antiquité. The Arab word is a deterioration of the Latin name Africa which comes itself from the word Berbère tafarka (Champ S). It is under this name that this territory is known at the time of the arrived of the Moslems and the resistance which is opposed to them by the Christian populations Berbères and . The continent, which was before named Libya by Hérodote car its name of this nomination that the Romans imposed by their conquest.

Ifriqya extended on the near total from the current territory from the Tunisia (out of the desert parts), on part of the North-East of the Algérie and on part of Libya (Tripolitaine).

History

To the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate , Ifriqiya tends to the autonomy. In 800, the khorassanien Ibrahim ibn Al-Aghlab obtains the title of emir of Kairouan and founds the dynasty of the Aghlabides.

At the end of the 9th century, the area falls under the cut from groups ismaéliens which end up founding the caliphate fatimide there. As of the middle of the 10th century, powerful Berber revolts hustle the capacity which moves its center of gravity in Egypt and entrusts the government of the area to a new dynasty of emirs Berbères: the Zirides. In 1046, these new leaders break with the capacity fatimide and recognize like suzerain the Caliph of Baghdad. Fatimides react in 1052 by sending the Hilaliens to plunder the area which subjects until the fall of the caliphate fatimide in 1171.

Ifriqiya is then dominated by the Hafsides, starting from 1230, then conquered in 1574 by the Othoman .
