Ieperlee
The Ieperlee is a channel and a river of the province of Western Flanders connecting the town of Ypres to the river Yser. The channel is 15 kilometers length. In the beginning, there was a small river whose source is close to the Mont Kemmel called Ipre or Iepere which meant “river with the Orme S”. Until the 10th century, the river ran directly towards the sea. At the 11th century, the river was diverted towards Yser.
Besides the Canal Plassendale-Nieuport borrows part of the old bed of the river before its diversion. Ieperlee belonged to the frontline at the time of the First World War. The channel is too small to meet the present needs and it is used more only for the pleasure sailing and fisherman.
