Idaux-Mendy

Idaux-Mendy is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Its name Basque is Idauze-Mendi .

Geography

Hydrography

The grounds of the commune are sprinkled by the Saison, which are thrown in the Gave d' Oloron, and by its affluents, the brooks Arangorena (12,5 km), Apouhoura (10,7 km) and Uhalteberri Erreka.

Toponymy

The toponym Idaux appears in the forms Feels-Pee Udaus and Ydauze (respectively 1454 and 1479, titles of Bayonne), Hidaus (1482, notaries of Larreule), Ideal Idauns and (1775, intendance of Pau).
The toponym Mendy appears in the form Feels-Marthii Mendi (1454, titles of Bayonne).

History

Paul Raymond note that " the commander of Ordiarp had right of presentation to the cure of Idaux (Saint-Pierre parish), which had as an appendix Saint Martin's day de Mendy".
The village of Mendy was linked with the commune of Idaux on June 27th, 1842.

Economy

The activity is primarily devoted to agriculture (breeding and pastures).
A processing undertaking of the products of the sea was installed on the commune.

Culture and inheritance

The Festival Euskal Herria Zuzenean which has as a slogan Eurock of the people against World Company unrolls each year with Idaux-Mendy.

Civil inheritance

A site protohistoric, known as of Choykanteguia, dating from the age of iron is present on the commune. It is registered with the historic buildings since 1982.
Several mills (Xamalbide, Xoro, Etxatz) are visible on the commune.

Religious heritage

The church of Idaux dates from the XVIIIe century. Just as that of Mendy, it has a wall-belfry known as " trinitaire" or souletin i.e. the peak of the wall, bored bays where the bells tinkle, are completed there by three large points about equal height, appearing the Trinity.
