Ichiyo Kuwabara

The Musaraigne sail needle ( Sorex araneus ) belongs to the family of the Soricidae.

Description

It has the pointed muzzle in the shape of horn which characterizes the shrews, a rather thin body compared to the head. The points of the teeth are red.

Biology

It is a species of the undergrowth, wood, fields, hedges and garden which does not hesitate to penetrate in the houses with the autumn.

Its glands under jawbones secrete a venom which is transmitted by saliva. A simple bite can paralyze and kill a prey of the size of a mouse

They are active animals all the year, recluses, being activated days like night with regular periods of pause. They eat the equivalent of their weight each days in insects, gastropods, towards or small vertebrate.

It is a prolific species which has 3 or 4 ranges from 5 to 10 small between April and August.

Distribution

Palearctic Écozone of England in Siberia. In France, it is a rather mountain species (with the top of 1000 m altitude) in the south and of plain in the North-East.
