Icecast

Icecast is a project of Logiciel waiter of diffusion of music in flow (Streaming). I.e. starting from a machine installed under Windows, Linux, Mac OS X,… you can diffuse music with " clients" on Internet or your Intranet (lan).

Icecast is a free software under public License general GNU.

There exists several other software owners comparable: Real Server, Windows Media, QTSS (QuickTime Streaming Server), SHOUTcast. Others free software are in the same vein: Darwin, Helix,…

The Icecast project belongs to the foundation Xiph.org, which carries out projects of codecs audio/video (Ogg, Theora,…) free.

Technical details

The waiter icecast is able to produce a flow of music to the format Ogg or MP3 through the protocol HTTP. It is also compatible with the ShoutCast protocol. A system icecast consists of one or more programs customers " source" who diffuse a source (music file, recording live, flow,…) towards a waiter. The listeners of flow connect themselves to the waiter with a customer (XMMS, Winamp for example), and receive the audio stream which it can then listen to. The icecast.org site maintains a list of customers sources and " players" compatible.
