Ibrahim Rugova
Ibrahim Rugova , born on December 2nd, 1944 with Cerrcë with the Kosovo and deceased on January 21st, 2006 with Pristina, was a Kosovan writer of famous international, graduate of letters of the Sorbonne and President of the Kosovo since the March 4th 2002. Member of the party in power the democratic League of Kosovo.
Biography
It was francophile and had studied with the Sorbonne. He usually spoke the French, the English and the Serbe, Ibrahim Rugova was a former member of the Communist party and secretary of the Union of the writers of the Kosovo.
He is elected president in March 2002 with the first elections organized by UNO in the province. He was re-elected in October 2004. Ibrahim Rugova who in March 2005 had escaped with a mysterious bomb attack with Pristina, chief town of the Kosovo.
Ibrahim Rugova incarnated the fight of Albanophones for their independence with respect to the Serbia. He smoked much until its doctors diagnose to him officially a Lung cancer in September 2005 of which he will die a few months later.
He was called the “Gandhi of Balkans” in an allusion to his choice of non-violence during repression under the mode Milosevic which had founded a true apartheid anti Albanian, his disappearance leaves a vacuum whereas the Kosovan political leaders are divided.
He was married and had three children.
Succession
According to the Provisional constitution of the Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova will be replaced by the vice president of the Parties of Release (LDK: parties of Rugova). Its death opens from now on the battle of its succession, but none the leaders of the Kosovo seems to currently profit from a support comparable with that which it had acquired. The principal candidates are currently the president of the Parliament of Kosovo, Nexhat Daci, 61 years, the main leader of the opposition, Hashim Thaci, 37 years, current the Prime Minister, Bajram Kosumi, 45 years, and leader of the reforming party, the ORA, Veton Surroï, 43 years.
