The Ibo are one of the three large Ethnie S of the Nigeria of which they constitute approximately eighteen percent of the Population. They are located mainly in the south-eastern part of the country (limited by the Bénoué to north and the river Niger to the west), but constitute also a big part of the population of both main cities of the country: Lagos in the west and Kano in north. Their languages are the different Igbo and its Dialecte S.
History
Before the European Colonisation the ibo live in small autonomous communities, without central government. The British arrival of the S in the Years 1870, bringing the Christian religion which will be largely adopted, also gives birth to an ethnic feeling of identity. With the independence of Nigeria the capacity is largely held by the two other majority ethnos groups (Haoussa and Yoruba) bringing, after many clashes, in 1967 with a declaration of independence under the name of Biafra. The war of reprisals with the governmental army of Nigeria and the famine which follows make tens of thousands of deaths. Biafra is reinstated in the remainder of Nigeria the January 16th 1970.
