Ibéroaméricaine federation of the ombudsman

The Fédération iberoamericaine of the ombudsman (FIO) was created in 1995. It gathers Ombudsman S Portuguese-speaking and Hispanic. It aims at the defense and the protection of the human rights.

General presentation

The ombudsmen or defenders of the people are public institutions independent of the capacities of the State, which promote the respect and the defense of the Human rights and have a function of monitorings of the public institutions. Its principal attributions are:

To receive and inquire into the charges and the complaints against the violations of the human rights;
To relative emit a public judgment with the contrary behaviors with the human rights;
To denounce at the public ministry the violations against the human rights made by people who act within the framework of their official or deprived functions;
To set up projects and programs to reveal and promote knowledge, the exercise and defense human rights.

The Commission of the FIO is composed by the ombudsmen of the country which integrates the federation and by three members named by the ombudsmen at the national level, regional or of the provinces to preserve specificities of these geographical divisions.

The vital objective of the FIO is the co-operation, the exchanges between the experiments and promotion, diffusion and consolidation of the figure of the ombudsman.

The FIO aims to extend and reinforce the culture of the human rights in the Member States by the promotion of relations of collaboration between international agencies and the governmental organizations.

The FIO supports the realization of studies and research on the coexistence between people and the operation of the democratic regimes.
