I have chance

J' have chance
I have chance (in an original manner in English I' m Feeling Lucky ) is, in the Search engine Google, the mode of research which directly opens the page arriving at the head of the results, without passing by the list of the proposals.

It draws its name from the Phrase registered on the button making it possible to reach it. The idea is that the user “has Chance” if this page corresponds perfectly to its research: it is indeed a profit of Temps, since it does not have to traverse the page of results and to manually select that which is appropriate.

A question of confidence

The effectiveness of this mode of research implies that results turned over by Google, and the order in which they are classified, are most relevant possible. Its use thus testifies to a certain confidence towards PageRank, the system of grading of Google.

On this subject, one can read on one of the pages of presentation of the site:

This mode of research is effective when the required entity has a official site, which is in particular the case of the institutions. The example given by Google in its pages of assistance is the Université Stanford, where the two founders of the site made their studies: a research on the Mot-clé “Stanford” redirects towards its site http://www.stanford.edu .

However, the intrinsic operation of the search engine makes that one can handle his results, by the means of a technique called Bombardement Google. Consequently, it is possible to harm something or somebody, by making so that a research about it in mode “I have chance” redirects towards a harmful page with his image. This functionality is not essential to a Google bombardment, but it maximizes the effect when one makes the demonstration of it.

History

August 1st

This button appears as of the first versions of the interface of Google, at the origin printed “I' m feeling lucky” (without the capital ).

Access

On the Banner page of Google, of the two buttons appearing under the Field of seizure, it is of that of right-hand side that it acts, the other being that intended for traditional research.

This configuration however is reversed when the interface is translated in written forms of right on the left.

Integration

In Firefox

This functionality is integrated by defect into the Navigateur Web Mozilla Firefox and is used by directly typing a research in the Barre of address. One can reach it more quickly thanks to the Raccourci keyboard Ctrl+L.

This behavior is defined by the value-key keyword.URL butt: config .

This integration presents however two bug S:

  • Once the user was redirected towards the first Google result, the key words seized by the user in the bar of addresses are not replaced by the new address of the target page. The problem was solved in the recent versions.
  • a badly seized address (for example a Colon ommis between http and both oblique bars //) is not recognized as a Adresse Web, but is regarded as a keyword for a Google research, and redirects towards a completely unexpected page: that corresponding to the first result of research “HTTP” (at one former time, it acted of the site of the Monde for a French research, and that of Microsoft for an English research; the key word points now on the page HTTP of Wikipédia). This behavior diverted certain users.

In the Google Toolbar

The mode of research “I have chance” is integrated in two manners into the Google Toolbar :

  • it can be obtained by maintaining the touches Alt supported at the time to click on the button of traditional research;
  • the users can also configure the bar of tools to add a button “I have chance” if they wish it; the sentence registered on the button is then accompanied by a icon representing a Four-leaf clover, considered as amulet.

URL

  • When a Web page was reached by using this option, the Referring recorded in the newspaper will be form http://www.google.fr/webhp? (instead of http://www.google.fr/search? when the Internaute reached it while clicking on a result).

  • One can create a Hyperlien towards a Google request in mode “I have chance” by adding the parameter btnI=I' m Feeling Lucky to the URL of the request. Thus, to click on http://www.google.com/search?q=stanford&btnI=I'm%20feeling%20lucky will redirect towards http://www.stanford.edu .

Derived around this Even

  • the firm markets on its Google Store of the accessories carrying this inscription, in particular of the Tee-shirt S (see opposite) , of the plates number, or of the Caleçon S at one former time. And this although the currency of the firm is actually “ Don' T Be evil ” (“do not make evil”).
  • In June 2004, Google repurchases Picasa, a Logiciel of management of images. The developers then incorporate in it a button “I have chance” allowing to balance automatically the Contraste and the Couleur S of an image; the user “has chance” if the modifications carried out by the software improve quality of the image (and can invalidate them if it is not the case).

Legal statute

November 30th, 2004, Google obtained that the original English sentence is a registered trademark with the the United States. One can thus find it followed mention “™” (for “ trademark ”).

In the various languages

The interface of Google is translated in many Langue S, which does as many versions of “I have chance”. Some are with the exclamative form, although the original is not it.

parodic or whimsical Languages

In addition, in ElgooG - a Web site which parodies Google by taking again its interface and its results, but by reversing the order of the letters - “I' m Feeling Lucky” becomes logically “ykcuL ginleeF me I” .

Pseudo-protocol

The use of this functionality can approach the technology of the mark-page S. It acts, for a Web page given, to find a combination of key words which will redirect towards this page by using the mode “I have chance”. One can then identify this page by the combination of key words found rather than by his URL.

This process can be used as Moyen mnemotechnics, or constitute a more convenient manner to communicate the address of a page with someone else.

This concept can even be implemented in the form of a pseudo procotole called IFL (Sigle of I' m Feeling Lucky ). It is a question of standardizing the notation while making precede the various key words by ifl: //, and by separating them by signs + , in order to make a true address of it. For example:

ifl: //stanford corresponds to http://www.stanford.edu
This protocol was proposed by the Web site Fish.cx under the slogan Link by What, not Where .

It is even possible to make so that the bonds pointing towards addresses IFL are effective. It is necessary for that to modify some entries of the Register base, under Windows. Programs were in addition developed in this same optics.

This system presents however a disadvantage: the Web being dynamic, the result best classified for a given combination of key words can vary with time. An address using protocol IFL is thus not stable.

Caricature S

The drawing of January 27th, 2006 of the Cartoon in line Joy off Tech , by Nitrozac & Snaggy, puts in scene an young man sitting in the middle of the Chaussée in front of a Laptop connected on the banner page of Google. In front of him, a column of tanks to the colors of the Popular republic of China. That which is head of the procession has its gun pointed on the young man, and its driver is addressed to him in these terms: “Are you feeling lucky? ” .

They are in fact of a reference to a very famous photography representing a man blocking only the projection the armor-plated at the time of the Manifestations of the place Tian' anmen, in 1989.

Indeed, Google would have self-censorship the results of the Chinese version of its search engine of images, so that these photographs giving an bad image of the mode in place do not appear to the Chinese users at the time of a research on the Place Tian' anmen.

For the same reasons, an association of student S American militant so that the Popular republic of China grants her Indépendance to the Tibet, designed a script for Greasemonkey - a extension of Firefox - which allows the user having installed it to locally modify the appearance of the banner page of Google. In particular, “I' m Feeling Lucky” is replaced there by “I' m feeling repressed” ( “repressed” meaning “oppressed”).
