I I , born the December 26th 1536 in Pukpyong in the province of Kangwon, died in 1584, is one of the two principal well-read men confucéens Korea NS of the dynasty Joseon (period Choseon), the other being its elder contemporary, I Hwang (Toegye). Its name was traditionally written Yi I until the recent reform of the romanisation of the Korean .

Its name is written in Korean: 이이 Hangul - 李珥 Hanja.

The mother of I I was called Sin Saimdang, an artist and calligrapher. The pen name of I I is Yulgok (sweet chestnut valley, 율곡; 栗谷). Its name of courtesy was Sukheon (숙헌; 叔獻).

Child prodigy, it learned how to write in Chinese at 3 years and composed of the traditional Chinese poems before reaching 7 years. He passed his examinations of mandarinat to 13 years. At 29 years, it makes a success of a higher examination, with the best notes, and started to be useful within the administration. He writes a thesis on the subject of Ch' ondoch' aek - which was regarded as a literary masterpiece, by showing its knowledge of the Confucianisme and the Taoïsme.

In 34 years, I I published Tongho Mundap , a treaty of 11 articles devoted to affirm its conviction that a government right could be carried out during its lifespan, by showing its desire for reaching that point.

I I renonca temporarily in the world while being locked up in the mountains of Diamond, following the death of his/her mother whereas it was 36 years old. On its return in the company, it published the Gasoline of the Confucianism in 1576.

complete Works of Yulgok were compiled after its death in 1584.

A street with Seoul is baptized according to its name ( Yulgongno ) and it is represented on the ticket Korea N of 5.000 Won S.
