ISO/CEI 11179
The standard ISO/CEI 11179 , known initially as the standard of Register of metadata, is a standard of representation of the Métadonnée S for an organization in a register of metadata.
This Norme is strongly recommended by the agencies of State and federal of the the United States, like the Web site XML of the government of the the United States.
The first versions were published by the ISO in 1994 (métamodèle). At the beginning of 2007, the standard is available only in English.
Strategic nature
The organizations need today to exchange quickly Donnée S and with precision between computing systems by using technologies of interfacings (EAI, protocols of exchanges, etc). Validated transactions must also be transferred according to the rules towards separate systems from Entrepôts from data with specialized structures conceived to give an effective access to the Donnée S.
Many experts in industry think that can be carried out effectively only if the Donnée S are precisely defined and that automatic tools are created to exchange data between distant Ordinateur S. The precise exchange of data between the computers is also a key success factor of the project semantic W3C Web.
The ISO/CEI 11179 is one of some ripe standards to record Métadonnée S of Entreprise in a controlled environment.
Structure of a register of metadata ISO/CEI 11179
A Registre of metadata ISO consists of a hierarchy of “concepts” with properties associated with each concept. The concepts are similar to the class “Object-oriented programming” but without the elements of behavior. The properties are similar to attributes of class. The ISO standards require that each concept and property must have a definition of element expressed very clearly.
Structure of standard ISO/CEI 11179
General plan
The standard includes/understands 6 parts:
- Left 1: tally for the specification and the standardization of the element (23 pages)
- Partie 2: classification of the elements (9 pages)
- Left 3: basic attributes of the elements (19 pages)
- Left 4: rules and directives for the formulation of the definitions of Given S (9 pages)
- Left 5: principles of denomination and identification of the elements of data (17 pages)
- Left 6: recording of the elements (62 pages)
Part 1 explains the objective of each part. Part 3 specifies the Métamodèle which defines the register. The other parts specify various aspects of the use of the register.
Elements
Each element in a register of metadata ISO/CEI 11179:
-
must be classified in a diagram of classification (11179-2) Voir Schéma of classification
- must be definite by the formulation of rules of definitions of Donnée S (11179-4) Voir Définition of element
- will be identified in a single way with the register (11179-5)
- must be named according to the principles of naming and of identification (11179-5) Voir Data element name
- must be registered according to the according to the Registration guidelines (11179-6)
Plan of part 6 recording
Part 6 on the recording is bulkiest by far (62 pages, re-examined in 2005). It describes the organization, the roles and responsibilities for the authorities which manage the Registres of metadata.

From the point of view of the roles, the standard distinguishes three profiles:
- Authorities Registration (RA),
- Responsible Organizations (RO),
- Submitting Organizations (SO).
Registration Acting Bodies can be RA, RO, or SO.
The standard describes the attributes of the metadata, the statutes of the “administered items”, and the attributes by statutes.
Examples of registers of metadata
The following registers of metadata state to follow the principles of the ISO/CEI 11179, although there was no test by a third of conformity to the principles of the standard of register of metadata:
- Australian Institute off Health and Welfare - Metadata Online Registry (METeOR)
- US Department off Justice - Total Justice XML Dated Model GJXDM
- US Environmental Protection Agency - Environmental Data Registry
- US Health Information Knowledgebase (USHIK)
- US National Institute Cancer - Cancer Dated Standard Repository (caDSR)
- US National Information Exchange Model NIEM
Supplier of registers of metadata which declare being in conformity with the ISO/CEI 11179
By alphabetical list:
-
Dated Foundations Metadata Registry
- Oracle Enterprise Metadata Manager (EMM)
There is no independent agency which certifies conformity with the ISO/CEI 11179.
